Begin with the effect, not the machine

Describe the desired audience moment, duration, direction, scale and repetition before selecting equipment. Similar-looking effects can introduce very different heat, pressure, residue, visibility, noise, electrical, fire-detection and regulatory considerations.

The planning decision may be to modify, relocate or remove an effect when the room, audience position, performer movement, ventilation or approval conditions cannot support it responsibly.

1. Classify the proposed effect

  • Laser display or laser-based scenic effect.
  • Atmospheric effect such as haze, fog or low fog.
  • Confetti, streamer or other projected material.
  • CO2 or cryogenic-style visual effect.
  • Spark, flame or pyrotechnic-category effect.
  • Mechanical, kinetic or pressure-driven scenic effect.

2. Establish competence and approvals

  • Identify the specialist supplier and operator responsible for the effect.
  • Confirm applicable manufacturer requirements, venue rules, insurance conditions and authority permissions.
  • Provide the venue with accurate equipment and operating information; do not describe one effect as another to simplify approval.
  • Document who can approve, arm, cue, inhibit and stop the effect.

3. Survey the operating environment

  • Audience, performer, crew and camera positions throughout the cue.
  • Ceiling height, surfaces, drape, scenic materials and nearby equipment.
  • Fire detection, suppression, ventilation and air movement.
  • Exits, circulation routes and the effect's possible fall or residue area.
  • Outdoor wind, weather, neighbouring activity and public exposure where relevant.

4. Integrate control with show operation

The operator should receive a clear cue only after the agreed readiness conditions are satisfied. A timecode or control connection does not remove the need for authority, observation and an inhibit or stop process.

Rehearsal should establish performer positions, camera impact, venue response and cleanup or reset time. If the full effect cannot be rehearsed, the limitations and alternate verification method must be understood by the production team.

5. Protect the no-go decision

  • Define conditions that prevent arming or require immediate inhibition.
  • Keep exclusion zones and operator sightlines clear after doors open.
  • Do not allow schedule pressure or client expectation to override the responsible operator or venue authority.
  • Prepare a show version that remains coherent if the effect is removed.

Practical clarifications

Can the venue approve an effect on the event day?

That should not be assumed. Venues and authorities may require technical information, risk documentation, insurance evidence, demonstrations or advance permission. Begin the approval path early.

Does timecode make an effect safe to cue?

No. Synchronisation does not replace site-specific design, competent operation, readiness checks, exclusion controls or the ability to inhibit a cue.

What is the best contingency for an unapproved effect?

Design the show so the moment remains coherent without the effect. Approval uncertainty should not threaten the running order or encourage unsafe last-minute substitution.
