A delay loudspeaker should support the stage, not pull attention away from it.
In a long ballroom, a correctly designed delay system can improve intelligibility and level consistency without forcing the main system to cover every seat at excessive output.
The selection principle

Place loudspeakers around audience geometry, then align their arrival so listeners retain a coherent relationship with the stage. Distance is the starting calculation; measurement and listening complete the decision.

Where does direct coverage from the main system stop being sufficiently consistent?
Placement
Can delayed loudspeakers cover distant listeners without spilling heavily onto nearby microphones or reflective surfaces?
Timing
What acoustic and electronic arrival relationships exist at the transition zone?
Level
Can the fill remain supportive rather than becoming the apparent primary source?
Content
Do speech, music and live stage energy require different alignment priorities?

Corporate ballroom
Delayed fills can preserve speech intelligibility at distant tables while keeping the visual and acoustic focus toward the stage.
Long dining layout
Several controlled coverage zones may produce a more even result than asking one front system to throw over every table.
Temporary venue
Rigging limits, columns, low ceilings and service routes may determine whether delays are flown, ground-supported or avoided.
The common mistake
Calculating delay from one tape-measure distance and stopping
The acoustic source position, processing latency, loudspeaker response, listening transition and desired localisation all matter. Confirm timing and polarity with measurement, then listen through the overlap region.
