The useful question is not simply “Which version suits this instrument?” It is “How much sound pressure reaches this capsule in this position, and what balance of headroom, sensitivity and detail does the production need?”

Use Loud SPL as the versatile starting point for many live-instrument applications. Use Extreme SPL when a very close or exceptionally intense source makes additional input headroom more important.

Extreme is not automatically better, and Loud is not fragile. Selecting more headroom than the source requires can trade away useful sensitivity; selecting too little can expose overload on the strongest transient. Placement can change the answer as much as the instrument itself.

Loud SPL is the practical starting point for violin, cello, acoustic guitar and similar sources when the objective is to retain nuance through quiet and energetic passages.

Begin with Loud SPL for typical clip-on positions. Move to Extreme when an unusually close bell position and player level show that more capsule headroom is required.

Grand piano

Loud SPL normally preserves the detail and harmonic structure that make close instrument miking useful. Position, lid configuration, spill and isolation remain part of the choice.

Congas and general percussion

Loud SPL can be appropriate when the capsule has useful distance from the strike zone. Check the loudest slap and the complete gain structure before settling the choice.

Snare, timbales and close toms

Extreme SPL becomes valuable where the capsule sits centimetres from sharp stick transients. DPA specifically identifies snare, timbale and other extremely loud instruments for this version.

An exceptional player or position

A forceful brass player at the bell or a mic moved much closer can turn a Loud application into an Extreme one. Level at the capsule—not the channel-list label—decides.

Identify the instrument, performer dynamics, stage volume and the loudest passage the programme is likely to produce.

Choose distance and angle for tone, separation, visibility, movement and safety before trying to solve everything with sensitivity choice.

Test the peak

Ask for the loudest realistic passage. Listen for capsule or downstream overload and watch level at every stage of the signal path.

Check the quiet passage

Confirm that the chosen sensitivity and gain structure also retain useful detail without creating avoidable noise or unstable gain.

Judge the microphone with monitors, PA, nearby instruments and audience-area coverage active; an isolated channel does not reveal the complete live problem.

Record the version, clip, position, channel gain and relevant performer notes so the setup can be repeated and deliberately adjusted.

DPA offers the 4099 CORE+ in Loud SPL and Extreme SPL versions and identifies Extreme for snare drums, timbale and other extremely loud instruments.

DPA also states that CORE+ moves the 1% THD threshold 10 dB higher and the clipping point 3 dB higher than the preceding 4099 technology. Those improvements widen usable performance; they do not remove the need to choose the appropriate sensitivity and position.
