Performer and position

Name every performer, stage position, movement area, instrument, vocal role and person authorised to request mix changes.

Independent mixes

Define who needs a unique mix, who can share, which console outputs are available and whether a monitor engineer or personal-control workflow owns changes.

Wired or wireless

Use movement and stage operation to decide whether a wired personal monitor is practical or a coordinated wireless link is justified.

Mono or stereo

Agree the required operating mode before allocating console buses, transmitter channels and spectrum. Stereo separation can improve clarity; mono can use system resources differently.

Earphones and fit

Confirm whether artists bring personal or custom earphones, which connection is required, how fit will be checked and how loan units will be cleaned and handled.

Ambience and communication

Plan audience or stage ambience, talkback and cues deliberately so isolation does not disconnect performers from the room or production team.

IEMs and stage wedges

IEMs can provide personal mixes, repeatable listening and less loudspeaker spill on stage. They also introduce isolation, fit, pack, battery and—in wireless systems—RF responsibilities.

Stage wedges remain useful where performers prefer an open acoustic connection, rapid shared monitoring or a simpler fixed-position system. Some productions use both deliberately. The correct format follows the people, stage and programme.

Do not coordinate IEMs after the microphones.

Wireless IEM transmitters, microphone transmitters, intercoms and guest systems share the venue's RF environment. Record device models and tuning ranges, verify locally usable spectrum, scan at an appropriate time, calculate compatible frequencies, plan transmitter antennas and monitor the live system.

IEMs do not automatically make listening safe. Sound level and exposure duration still matter. Establish conservative starting levels, controlled gain structure and appropriate limiting; avoid sudden unannounced changes; include quiet recovery time; and seek qualified audiological advice for individual hearing concerns.

Advance the rider

Build stable gain

Set console, transmitter or wired-pack input, bodypack output and limiting behaviour so useful level is achieved without avoidable noise or sudden jumps.

Match packs, earphones, frequencies, mixes and batteries to named performers; lock or protect settings where appropriate.

Soundcheck the person

Begin at a conservative listening level, confirm both ears, source balance, ambience, cues and movement in the actual performance area.

Keep the agreed spare pack, batteries, earphones or wired fallback ready, and assign who detects, replaces and confirms the restored mix.

01What is an in-ear monitoring system?+

It carries a monitor mix from the console to earphones worn by a performer. A wireless system normally adds a transmitter and bodypack receiver; a wired system feeds an appropriate personal monitor device directly.

02Are IEMs always better than stage wedges?+

No. IEMs can improve consistency, reduce stage spill and give performers personal mixes, but they add fit, mix, RF, pack, battery and isolation considerations. Wedges, IEMs or a deliberate combination may suit different performers and stages.

03Should an IEM mix be mono or stereo?+

That depends on console outputs, transmitter capability, available spectrum, performer preference and the number of independent mixes. Stereo can improve separation; mono can use resources differently. The operating mode must be agreed and tested rather than assumed.

04Can wireless microphones and IEMs be coordinated separately?+

They should be treated as one RF inventory for the venue. Device bands, occupied spectrum, intermodulation, antennas, transmitter locations and other wireless systems need a coordinated plan.

05Do IEMs automatically protect a performer's hearing?+

No. Isolation and a controlled mix may support lower listening levels, but unsafe level or duration can still cause harm. Fit, gain structure, limiting, exposure management and qualified hearing-health advice remain important.

06What should an artist provide before the event?+
