Audio cables are rarely the most visible part of an event production, but they are fundamental to everything the audience hears. A premium sound system can still suffer from noise, intermittent signals or complete channel failure when the wrong cable is selected, poorly terminated or inadequately tested.
Professional selection is not simply a matter of choosing a famous brand. Signal type, electrical construction, shielding, connector quality, run length, flexibility, durability and deployment conditions all matter. So do the processes used to inspect, identify, test, route and maintain the finished assembly.
Cable and connector are not synonyms

DIFFERENT JOBS.
The cable carries the signal. Its conductors, insulation, geometry, shield and jacket determine its electrical and mechanical behaviour. The connector provides the physical interface, contacts and strain relief at each end. The final assembly is only as dependable as its least suitable component or weakest termination.
XLR, TRS and speakON are connector families. They do not, by themselves, tell you everything about the cable attached to them. Two leads with the same connector can be designed for entirely different signals and loads.

XLR and TRS
Balanced connections use two signal conductors and a shield, allowing receiving equipment to reject noise common to both signal lines. They are standard for many professional microphone and line-level paths, especially over longer runs.
TS is not TRS
A typical guitar or keyboard instrument lead uses a two-contact TS connector and shielded unbalanced cable. A TRS connector has three contacts and may carry balanced mono, unbalanced stereo or another device-specific function. The connector must be interpreted with the equipment documentation.
Speaker cable and speakON
A passive loudspeaker line carries amplified power, not a delicate microphone signal. It requires adequately sized conductors for the load and distance. speakON connectors are designed for loudspeaker connections, but conductor size and wiring remain critical.
AES3
AES3 commonly travels through three-pin XLR connectors, but a 110-ohm cable specified for digital audio should be used. A conventional analogue microphone lead may appear to work over a short distance without being the correct or dependable design choice.
Data cable and etherCON
Dante and other networked-audio systems use Ethernet networking. Cable category, channel length, construction and network design matter. etherCON adds a ruggedised connector shell; it does not change Ethernet’s underlying performance requirements.
Read the complete system
Intercom, RF, clock, control and other production systems can use familiar connectors for specialised signals. Never infer compatibility from connector shape alone.
Five selection questions
WHAT
ACTUALLY MATTERS?
Signal and format
First identify what must travel: microphone or line-level analogue audio, an instrument signal, amplified loudspeaker output, AES3 digital audio or network data. Similar-looking connectors do not make these signals interchangeable.
Electrical requirement
Balanced or unbalanced operation, characteristic impedance where specified, conductor size, capacitance, shielding and maximum practical distance must suit the system—not a generic idea of quality.
Mechanical duty
A touring lead must tolerate repeated deployment, flexing and coiling. A fixed installation may have different jacket, fire-performance and documentation requirements. Neither should be assumed suitable for the other.
Termination
Connector quality, soldering or contact termination, strain relief and assembly workmanship are part of the signal path. Premium bulk cable cannot rescue a poor termination.
Production consequence
The more important the signal, the stronger the case for deliberate routing, protected connections, monitoring and a practical replacement or alternate path.
Balanced versus unbalanced
BALANCED DOES NOT
MEAN “BETTER”
IN ISOLATION.
Balanced transmission is valuable because compatible source and receiving circuits can reject common-mode interference. It does not make every connected device balanced, eliminate every noise mechanism or compensate for incorrect wiring. Unbalanced connections remain appropriate in many instruments and short equipment interconnects; they simply require more care around distance, grounding and interference.
Reliability is a process

Inspect
Look for jacket cuts, crushing, kinks, exposed conductors, loose shells, damaged contacts, failed latches and strain at the termination.
Identify
Make type and length easy to recognise. Clear identification reduces incorrect deployment and speeds replacement when the schedule is tight.
Test
Verify continuity and conductor mapping with suitable test equipment. Application-specific checks may also be required; a basic continuity pass does not prove every performance characteristic.
Route
Protect cables from sharp bends, crushing, tension, moisture, heat, vehicle paths and unsafe guest circulation. Plan proximity to power around the system and site conditions.
Secure
Relieve strain at connectors, protect joins and avoid creating trip hazards. Rugged hardware does not remove the need for deliberate installation.
Recover
Coil without twisting, inspect after use, isolate suspect assemblies and repair or retire them before they silently return to production stock.

This is a transparent statement about what we use—not a numbered brand ranking or a claim that one manufacturer is universally correct. The finished assembly must still be properly specified, terminated, inspected, deployed and maintained for its intended role.
Other established manufacturers serve professional applications. The responsible comparison is between relevant specifications, construction and use cases, not logos in a league table.

A dependable cable path comes from a chain of correct decisions: identify the signal, choose suitable electrical and mechanical construction, use the correct connector, terminate it well, test the assembly, route it responsibly and prepare for the consequence of failure. Brand is evidence of a choice. It is not a substitute for engineering discipline.
