A shotgun microphone is not an audio zoom lens. It is a directional tool whose useful result depends on distance, angle, reflections, wind, handling, camera framing and the system around it.
What it actually does
DIRECTIONALITY
IS NOT ISOLATION.
Most professional shotgun microphones combine a directional capsule with an interference tube. Sound arriving from the side enters openings along the tube and reaches the capsule through different path lengths. At frequencies where those arrivals are sufficiently out of time, some lateral energy is reduced.
The response changes with frequency and angle. Rear pickup, low-frequency ambience, room reflections and nearby noise do not disappear. Longer or more directional is therefore not automatically better.
The goal is the cleanest usable signal in this environment, not the most dramatic specification.

REFLECTIONS CHANGE THE DECISION.
In a reflective ballroom, meeting room or hard-surfaced interview location, off-axis arrivals can be coloured. We select around the room, speaker position, camera frame and reinforcement requirement, not specifications alone.
OUT OF FRAME. NOT OUT OF RANGE.
A shotgun works well when it can remain close and correctly aimed without entering frame or casting a shadow. Distance still changes the balance between direct voice and room sound.
WIND PROTECTION IS PART OF THE SYSTEM.
A suitable windshield, suspension, boom technique, protected cable movement and deliberate gain structure can matter more than moving to a more expensive microphone.
Shotgun or lavalier?

WORKFLOW.
SHOTGUN
No clothing noise and a natural off-camera perspective, but movement needs controlled placement or active aiming.
LAVALIER
Usually follows a moving speaker consistently, but fitting, wardrobe, clothing noise and radio operation become part of the workflow.
Both can serve fast corporate interviews. Camera framing, movement, room acoustics, PA spill and operating support decide.

The common mistake
“USE THE MOST
DIRECTIONAL MIC.”
More directivity can demand more accurate aiming and make reflected off-axis sound more noticeable. If the microphone must remain too far away, the speaker moves unpredictably or the room is highly reflective, another format or a closer working position may be stronger.
What microphone and placement give us the cleanest usable signal here?
This is why microphone choice for a 500-person ballroom conference can differ completely from a filmed executive interview in the same hotel.
