Editorial principle

A networked-audio system is still an audio system. The network must be deliberately designed, documented and operated around the production consequence.

Networked audio can carry many channels over shared physical links and make routing flexible. It also concentrates decisions that analogue patching makes visible.

Establish a suitable clock leader and verify synchronisation, sample rate and device status.

Patch intended transmit and receive channels, then save and document the working state.

Latency

Choose settings the network and device path can sustain with margin; lower is not automatically safer.

Observe links, errors, clock state, subscriptions and audio at meaningful points—not software colour alone.

Before connecting to a venue or corporate network, establish ownership, switch capability, configuration, security, traffic, addressing and change control. Where those conditions cannot be guaranteed, use an appropriately designed production network.

Map failure domains

Identify what one cable, switch, power source or configuration error can remove.

Respect device capability

Not every endpoint supports the same redundancy mode or recovery behaviour.

Separate infrastructure

Where redundancy is required, evaluate switches, links, power and routes—not just duplicate ports.

Keep fallback useful

Some critical signals may justify a separate analogue or digital route outside the network.

Test recovery

Remove representative links safely and confirm expected continuity and alarms before show day.

Control changes

Freeze the working configuration and route necessary edits through one network owner.

01What is Dante in live audio?+

Dante is an audio-over-IP technology used to route digital audio between compatible devices over Ethernet networks. A working design also depends on the network, clocking, subscriptions and operational configuration.

02Does Dante remove the need for audio cables?+

No. It changes how many audio channels can travel between network points, but systems still require analogue or digital connections at endpoints, network cabling, power and appropriate physical infrastructure.

03Can Dante share a network with ordinary data traffic?+

It can in a deliberately engineered environment, but traffic, switch configuration, bandwidth, multicast behaviour, timing and ownership must be understood. A convenient available port is not automatically a production network.

04What happens if the network switch fails?+

The impact depends on topology and redundancy. A single central switch can be a major failure domain; critical designs evaluate primary and secondary paths, device capabilities, power and practical fallback audio routes.

05What should be documented before show day?+

Document devices, names, addresses, switch ports, subscriptions, clock leader, sample rate, latency, primary and secondary paths, ownership, saved configurations and the intended recovery procedure.
