The transducer principle affects sensitivity, powering, physical design and behaviour, but the useful live-event choice still depends on the source, placement, environment and complete signal chain.

Dynamics often suit intense close sources. Purpose-designed condensers can retain attack, extension and detail where placement and spill permit.

A controlled interview may reward condenser sensitivity, while a noisy untreated space may favour a close dynamic or another tightly managed format.

The common mistake

Selecting by transducer label alone

Polar pattern, frequency response, sensitivity, maximum SPL, self-noise, physical format and placement can matter as much as whether the capsule is dynamic or condenser.

01What is the main difference between dynamic and condenser microphones?+

Dynamic microphones commonly use a diaphragm, voice coil and magnet to generate a signal. Condenser microphones use an electrically charged diaphragm and backplate with active circuitry, so they require power.

02Do condenser microphones always sound better?+

No. A well-chosen dynamic may provide the required tone, isolation and durability. The result depends on the microphone design, source, placement and environment.

03Do all condenser microphones need phantom power?+

Condenser microphones require power, but the source may be phantom power, an internal battery or a dedicated supply. Confirm the manufacturer's requirement before connection.

04Are dynamic microphones only for loud sources?+

No. They are widely used for speech and instruments because of their practical behaviour and robustness, but source level is only one selection factor.

05Which type is better for live events?+
