Front or rear projection? The room decides before the projector does.

Front projection uses room-side throw space; rear projection places the projector behind a translucent screen. Each changes stage depth, shadows, sightlines, brightness efficiency, access and safety.

Front projection

Often uses less backstage depth and conventional screens, but requires a protected beam path and can create shadows when people cross it.

Rear projection

Keeps equipment and beam behind the scenic surface, but needs translucent material, backstage footprint and careful control of hotspot and spill.

Short-throw options

Special lenses can reduce required distance in either orientation, but model compatibility, offset, focus, ventilation and geometry still require verification.

The common mistake

Choosing rear projection only because it looks cleaner

The hidden projector may consume valuable stage depth and require a suitable lens and screen. If geometry is forced, brightness uniformity, focus, access and scenic integration can suffer.

01What is rear projection?+

The projector is installed behind a translucent screen and the image passes through the screen toward the audience.

02Does rear projection eliminate presenter shadows?+

It removes the normal audience-side beam crossing, but backstage movement and objects must still be kept out of the rear beam path.

03Is rear projection brighter than front projection?+

Not inherently. Usable brightness depends on projector output, lens, screen transmission or gain, image size, ambient light and viewing angle.

04How much space does rear projection need?+

The exact projector, lens throw ratio, image size, offset and access requirements determine the depth. Use manufacturer calculations for the complete combination.

05Can an ultra-short-throw lens solve every space constraint?+

No. Compatibility, focus, offset, ventilation, hotspot risk, screen characteristics and service access still have to be checked.
