PROVANTAGE / Production Notes 21
A fast changeover is designed before anyone starts moving equipment.
Stage plots, input lists, backline packages, risers, cable paths, power, patching, RF, communications, storage and crew assignments must describe one repeatable transition.
The selection principle
START WITH
THE APPLICATION.
Reduce live decisions during the changeover. Pre-build, label, test and assign every movement; protect shared systems; rehearse the sequence when programme risk justifies it.
Equipment follows the production decision.
Five-question selection check
States
What exact outgoing and incoming stage configurations define the transition?
Shared systems
Which audio, RF, monitor, lighting, scenic and safety elements must remain untouched?
Movement
What travels on risers, carts or by hand, through which routes, and where is it parked?
Patch
Which connections change, stay, mute, test or switch between prepared groups?
Release
Who calls each phase and confirms that stage, audio, lighting and artist teams are ready?
Application notes
Context changes the answer.
Awards entertainment
A performance may enter between speeches, requiring silent pre-positioning, controlled reveal and rapid return to presentation state.
Festival
Multiple artist packages benefit from rolling risers, isolated looms, duplicated essentials and clear line-check ownership.
Corporate stage reset
Panels, lecterns, furniture and entertainment positions must change without damaging screens, scenic surfaces, microphones or programme timing.
The common mistake
Estimating changeover time from equipment count
Route conflicts, cable disconnection, storage, riser movement, patch verification, RF handover, safety checks and release communication determine the real duration.
Operational checklist
Brief. Test. Document.
01 / Draw outgoing and incoming states
02 / Colour-code every move and owner
03 / Pre-build and test offstage packages
04 / Protect shared paths and equipment
05 / Run a timed sequence or tabletop rehearsal
06 / Line-check, inspect and release by authority

These sources support the technical principles. They do not imply endorsement, inventory ownership or a universal equipment recommendation.
The PROVANTAGE position
A better brief produces a more dependable system.
We select, place and operate production technology around the room, programme, people and consequences of failure.
